Emanuel Ax was born in Lvov, Poland He began to study the piano at the age of six in Warsaw. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1961 and he later continued his studies at The Juilliard School. He is also a graduate of Columbia University where he majored in French. He won the Rubinstein Competition in 1974 and was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1979. He lives in New York with his wife, the pianist Yoko Nozaki, and their two children.
