Music Examinations

There are several organizations which offer graded examinations, certificates and diplomas in music. For each area of music study there is a syllabus which represents a course of study progressing sequentially through grade levels. Annually (or at more frequent intervals in some cases) a schedule is set up where an examiner will hear the student perform (from memory) a set number of pieces; demonstrate technical skills such as scales, arpeggios, and etudes; identify intervals, play back melodies and perform other ear tests; and sight read an unfamiliar piece. Graded examinations are also available in theory, harmony, counterpoint and music history which are coordinated with the practical exams. In some areas, high school credit is available for completion of certain grade levels.
