The Mississauga Youth Orchestra is an orchestra program for young musicians aged 7 to university age designed to give them training and experience in orchestral and ensemble playing. True to its philosophy of "enriching life through music", the orchestra organises four major concerts a year, an orchestra trip to participate in a youth orchestra festival as well as a weekend retreat in September to start the season. The program consists of three groups:
Concert Strings: Praise Lam, conductor. Provides an opportunity for young string players to develop elementary musical and ensemble skills. Rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Symphonic Band: Misha Rohac, conductor. Provides and opportunity for young brass and woodwind players to experience symphonic repertoire and develop ensemble skills. Rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Youth Orchestra: John Barnum, conductor. A full orchestra which performs standard orchestra repertoire. Advanced students are encouraged to audition as soloists with the orchestra. Rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Rehearsals are held at Port Credit Secondary School on Mineola Road (north of Lakeshore, east of Hwy 10, south of QEW).
Concerts are held at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre
Tuition fees: $245.00 annually for the youth orchestra; $205.00 annually for Concert Strings and Symphonic Band (fees include an MYO T-shirt). Fee reduction for siblings.
