The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a new policy urging parents to avoid television for children under 2 years old and recommending media education. "While certain television programs may be promoted to this age group, research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant care givers for healthy brain growth and the development of appropriate social, emotional and cognitive skills." The report also recommends that pediatricians incorporate questions about media use into their routine visits. This policy is published in the August issue of Pediatrics and can be viewed at the APP site.
