Internet Changing Physician-Patient Relationship
With instant access to overwhelming amounts of information on the internet, more patients are learning about their condition resulting in more informed physician-patient interaction and more patient participation in the treatment. Recently, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center reviewed over 400 sites finding an alarming level of inaccuracy and misinformation. Many contained data and recommendations that came from non-reviewed sources or didn't list the source at all. The report is published in the August issue of the journal Cancer. Information about the report at the Center's web site also contains a list of reliable sites.
The US Education Department held a forum on August 12 entitled Safe Schools, Safe Students: What Parents Can Do. This teleconference included a video message from President Clinton as well as live appearances by Secretary Riley and Attorney General Janet Reno and a discussion with expert panelists from across the country. The program also included roundtable discussions, viewer calls and videotapes of safe schools and safe communities in action.
