Growing Concern for Brain Injury from Headers in Soccer
More studies are taking place to determine possible links between a soccer manoeuvre calling "heading" and risk for brain damage. Of particular concern are children under the age of 12 where co-ordination and neck strength may not be sufficiently developed. So far studies have shown some short term effects with recovery however there are concerns about effects over the long term. The Insitute for Preventative Sports Medicine has a study underway which is also examining safer techniques, posssible rule changes, and use of protective headgear during training. A report on this study is expected to be published soon. Also see article from "The Soccer Doctor."
