New Canadian Web Site: Choosing the Right University or College
TVO (TV Ontario) has launched a new web site http://www.uchoose.tvo.org which coordinates with their broadcast "Get With the Program" on October 23 and 24 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EDT. The program is intended as an interactive exploration of how to make choices regarding post-secondary education in Ontario. The website includes a printable checklist with questions to ask about program requirements, financing, housing and student services. The site is intended as a resource tool to be available after the broadcast.
John Bruer, President of the James S. McDonnell Foundation, has just released a book, The Myth of the Early Years: A New Understanding of Early Brain Development and Lifelong Learning, challenging the current media messages and political actions which inappropriately cite brain research as their basis. While Bruer agrees that there are valid scientific studies which support the existence of critical periods in brain development, he shows that these same brain studies prove that learning and cognitive development take place throughout all childhood and that we are in fact hard-wired for life-long learning. He cautions us not to overemphasize infant and toddler nurturing at the expense of long-term parental and educational responsibilities.
