In 1993, the Government of Canada designated November 20 as National Child Day to commemorate two United Nations events: the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. Read about the special activities and events being celebrated across the country at the National Child Day website (in french).
Last week Statistics Canada released its report General Social Survey: Time Use based on data collected on almost 11,000 Canadians in 1998 with comparisons to a similar survey in 1992. One-third of the Canadians aged 25 - 44 identified themselves as workaholics and more than half are worrying that they do not have enough time to spend with family and friends. Details can be found at the Statistics Canada site. Interestingly, Ellen Galinsky who heads the Families and Work Institute in New York recently surveyed 1,000 children from grades 3 to 12 and found that heading their wish list was for their parents to be less stressed and less tired by work. Details are published in her book Ask the Children: What America's Children Really Think About Working Parents.
