New Florida School Blends On-Line Courses with Traditional High School Culture

The new Daniel Jenkins Academy will open this fall in Polk County, Florida where students will learn all their academics on-line in a bricks-and-mortar school setting. Full-time on-line teachers will provide instruction from their homes around the state as well as giving assignments and grades. In the school building, students will be guided through their individualized, self-paced learning by a team of facilitators, counselors, resource teachers and technicians. The final exams will be standard written exams based on state standards. Students will attend school daily, mingle with fellow students, share lunch and will be able to participate in music, drama and sports activities at a neighboring school. The curriculum also includes projects and field trips away form the school. Time management and written communication skills are important factors for student success in on-line learning. The school has a huge waiting list for this fall's inaugural class.
