Oscar Peterson Exhibit at National Gallery of Canada

The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa is celebrating jazz pianist Oscar Peterson's 75th birthday with a an exhibition on his career. Peterson has donated over 200 artifacts to the library's archives. The exhibition continues until June 23, 2001. A web site devoted to Oscar Peterson is at http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/oscarpeterson


Improvements in Well-Being of America's Children

America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2000 reports fewer children living in poverty, less violent crime among young people, and the lowest teen birthrate in at least 40 years. This annual report, compiled by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, looks at economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education providing a broad annual summary of national indicators of child well-being and monitoring changes in these indicators over time. http://childstats.gov/ac2000/ac00.asp


Violence Linked to Brain Patterns

The journal Science reported on July 28 that in people prone to violence, the orbitofrontal cortex area of the brain which is responsible for emotional self-regulation appears to be short-circuited. Researchers are suggesting that it might be possible to rewire these faulty circuits with drugs or psychological therapy. There is also evidence that the environment that teachers and parents provide children can affect the development of brain circuits and psychological capacities needed for self-control.
