The secret formulas in the quest for kid's dollars are actively being made available to companies who want to tap into this lucrative market. Parents and teachers might wish to check out Kid Power Xchange, an online resource for youth marketers, to get a flavour for the strategies being promoted to turn children into profitable customers. The site promotes conferences such as the one held recently in Toronto, Successful Strategies to reach Canadian kids and teens, and includes articles and recommended book titles. The Canadian Teachers' Federation warns us that these conferences also give entrepreneurs tricks and techniques to exploit our youth inside the classroom. The CTF reminds us to be vigilant as the private sector has been rushing into our schools to fill the gaps caused by cutbacks in public education. See the CTF's criteria for education-corporate partnerships and other articles, papers and links related to public education and and the private sector at http://www.ctf-fce.ca/e/what/ni/public.htm

Site a New Model for Performing Artists: Linda Maguire, Mezzo-Soprano
Canadian Mezzo-Soprano, Linda Maguire, has created a web site which sets an interesting model for performing artists. While it includes a biography, discography, audio clips, video clips, photo gallery, web rings, and discussion board, items that one might expect on such a site, Maguire takes the Internet medium in some new directions. First of all, she has designed the site to serve as a preliminary "audition" for producers in a way that provides them a more complete picture of her capabilities then a 10 minute audition could provide. She has also launched a second site called http://www.operahouse2000.com . Every Saturday morning she is available for a chat with music lovers. She also provides a novel service where, initially for $200, a music listener can order a specially prepared performance (with a personalized introduction) of a requested aria following the listener's specifications for the opera's character. She will also provide prompts to assist the the audience to use their creativity to determine the product. The performance would then be available online to the listener and then she would send a videocassette of the specialized performance to the listener.
