Participants in Outward Bound Wilderness School courses learn the technical skills for travel in the wilderness with the goal to develop life skills including adaptability, responsibility, confidence, integrity, persistence, peer leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, goal-setting, risk assessment, self-reliance, clear and honest communication, the ability to work with others and a respect for environment.

Youth courses are primarily canoe expeditions with activities ranging from rock climbing, to kayaking to back country navigation. Adult courses provide opportunities to grow and test yourself in a wilderness setting, to reflect on life and to gain new perspectives.

The basic youth courses are three weeks duration. Other courses vary from 3 days to 42 days. Participants have a wide range of physical abilities though are encouraged to prepare with a physical training program. There is a high emphasis on safety. As the course progresses there is a gradual shift of responsibility from instructors to the participants and the group as technical and decision-making abilities grow.
